Fearless Abstract Painting in Acrylics

Date: Saturday, Sunday, July 31, August 1, 2010

Location: Jerry's Artarama, Raleigh, NC  Time: 10am-4pm each day

Join Joe in this informative two day painting workshop intended to help the emerging artist “get over their fears”, of painting abstractly in acrylics on canvas. This class will focus on students wanting to paint larger and to incorporate “action” into their artwork. This workshop is for the emerging artist wanting to take their work further by using the 4 basic elements of abstract compositions in acrylics: line, shape, texture and color.

Former students are urged to attend to continue to develop their work in this 2 day painting free for all. Joe’s Black Bag exercise will be included.

Supply List: Acrylic Paint: I suggest the Matisse Australian Acrylic Set, but any acrylics are fine

Brushes: Mural # 40 Flat Nylon Brush (large areas and varnishing), Any Acrylic or Bristle Brushes you have (I suggest the Pro Stroke Flat or Bright Set), Any Fan Brush (For Spattering), A large Liner Brush - Pro Arte # 4 Liner

Canvas: 2 large canvases - at least 24”x30” up to 30”x40”

Mediums: Matisse Acrylic Painting Medium MM9, Matisse Acrylic Gloss Medium and Varnish MM7, Matisse Matt Medium MM5, 8oz bottle of Gesso

Other Suggested items: Paper Towels, Water bucket (Coffee Can), Design Ebony Pencil and eraser, Assorted Oil Pastels - Mungyo Oil Pastel Set of 12, Blue painters tape - quick release 2" wide

Large Multimedia Abstracts on Paper

Date: Saturday September 4, 2010

Location: Jerry's Artarama, Raleigh, NC  Time: 10am-4pm 

Join Joe in creating large format abstractions on paper like Kline, Diebenkorn, and de Kooning, as well as other great Abstract Expressionists. Deal with large energized abstractions on paper that focus on composition and use the four basic elements of line, shape, color and texture.

Employ acrylics, graphite, spray paint, oil pastels and anything you could imagine in your art, while putting “action” back into your free form work. Learn to get over your inhibitions and create fearlessly. The answer in this all day paint fest will always be a resounding,” YES!” Joe’s Black Bag exercise will be included.

Supply List - Acrylic Paint: I suggest the Matisse Acrylics (colors- Black, Australian Sienna, Southern Ocean Blue, Unbleached titanium, Titanium White)

Brushes: Any Large bristle long handle brushes, Mural # 40 Flat Nylon Brush (varnishing), Mural # 30,40, 50 Flat Bristle Brush (painting Large Areas), Mural #30,40,50 Bristle Round, A large Liner Brush – Pro Arte # 4 Liner

Surface: Full sheets of 300lb WC Paper, Roll of Strathmore 400 Series Drawing Paper -10 yd roll, One 32 x 40 sheet of foam core or a piece of plywood

Mediums: Bottle of Gesso, Satin Varnish (Brush or Spray), Other Suggested items, Montana Spray Paint- Black, Gold or Silver, Paper Towels, Water bucket (Coffee Can), Design Ebony Pencil or Woodless Graphite Pencil -6B, Assorted Oil Pastels – Mungyo Oil Pastel Set of 12 (around 3 bucks), Blue painters tape- quick release 2" wide.
